The CIS Challenge is a program to discover and nurture space healthcare startups in collaboration with private space station developer Axiom Space and aerospace startup accelerator Starburst to support various human activities in space as part of the CIS (Care In Space) project. At the Samuel Oschin Pavilion of the California Science Center, the main stage of the event, NASA's last space shuttle Endeavor, which completed its missions in 2011, is displayed, making the presentations of the participating teams even more meaningful.
Six promising space healthcare startups selected on the Pitch Day event presented solutions to potential health problems that humans might face in space, which is completely different from Earth.
Jay Kim, Chairman and CEO of Boryung, who awarded the six winners, said, 'Recently, with the participation of private companies, the frequency and duration of human visits to space are rapidly increasing,' adding, 'We will lead the mission of freeing human activities in space in partnership with many partner companies through the challenge.'
Experts from all fields invited by Boryung delivered insightful talks on ways to realize human life and habitation in space.
In particular, Dr. Yi So-yeon, the first South Korean astronaut, and Michael Lopez, Vice President of Axiom Space and former astronaut of NASA, who led the civilians space travelers o the mission 'AX-1' in April, spoke about life in space.
In a panel discussion attended by representatives and employees of investment companies that have invested in space developers, there was an in-depth conversation about global investors' interest in space and current trends, under the theme of 'Why Invest in Space'.
Jack Lim, Head of the New Portfolio Investment team at Boryung Global Investment Center, who planned the event, said, “We have once again recognized the interest in space from the relevant industry, academia and investment sector. Through the 2nd and 3rd annual events, we will find new investment opportunities and ways to contribute to humanity.” Lim also said, “We hope that Boryung will be able to play an important role in the successful launch of the Korea Space Agency next year, with information and experiences earned through the CIS Challenge, as well as extensive networks.”
