Boryung announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Intuitive Machines and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the 2024 International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Milan, Italy, to broaden collaboration in the field of space healthcare.
Intuitive Machines achieved a significant milestone in February by successfully landing a robotic lander on the lunar surface, becoming the first private U.S. entity to do so. In September, NASA awarded them a $5 billion contract to develop a Near Space Network (NSN) relay system. The company is poised to launch its second lunar mission later this year, further solidifying its position as a leader in the commercial space exploration sector.
Building upon this MOU, Boryung will collaborate with Intuitive Machines to jointly seek and support space healthcare research projects to be conducted on the lunar surface. The company is exploring the possibility of utilizing its ongoing Humans In Space Challenge program as a platform for recruiting participants in these joint endeavors.
Intuitive Machines is also planning to participate in developing a Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV) for NASA's Artemis mission. They are discussing the possibility of creating a platform for conducting space medicine experiments on this LTV in partnership.
Jay Kim, CEO and Chairman of Boryung, stated, 'Intuitive Machines is at the forefront of lunar exploration technology related to NASA's Artemis mission.' He further emphasized, 'This agreement provides a significant opportunity to expand beyond Boryung's Humans In Space initiative and contribute to the expansion of South Korea's lunar exploration activities.'
Meanwhile, Boryung has signed an MOU with the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Thales Alenia Space to collaborate on the HIS program. They discuss ways to leverage their expertise in space medicine research and validation and its network for the Humans In Space Challenge acceleration program and collaboratively develop research on future topics of interest.
Jack Lim, Head of New Portfolio Investment at Boryung, stated, 'These agreements will enable Humans In Space to substantially broaden its partnerships in Europe.' He further emphasized, 'Building upon these collaborations, Humans In Space is poised to become a premier program in the global space healthcare ecosystem.'
